Our Impact Starts With Students

Schools don’t just teach science or civics, they help shape values, habits, and leadership. By embedding sustainability into the school experience, we give students the tools to become thoughtful, informed, and empowered citizens. We prepare them not just for the jobs of tomorrow, but for the responsibilities of living in a changing world.
If we want a sustainable future, we must start with our schools.

Equipping school communities with the tools to turn climate goals into action.

Schools we've worked with

Rancho Elementary

Rancho launched the district's first Zero Waste Program in 2022. Students serve as compost monitors, guiding classmates through proper sorting, and have diverted more than 14,000 lbs of food waste from the landfill.

Our Programs in Action

We help schools in Marin County, California turn sustainability goals into practical action across four key areas.

Zero Waste

We help schools reduce waste through recycling, composting, reusable foodware, waste reduction, and hands-on training and education

At Rancho Elementary

Rancho launched the district's first Zero Waste Program in 2022. Students serve as compost monitors, guiding classmates through proper sorting, and have diverted more than 14,000 lbs of food waste from the landfill.

Environmental Literacy

We build environmental literacy through curriculum, climate action opportunities, hands-on learning, and pathways to green careers.

At Loma Verde Elementary

After classroom presentations on why waste sorting matters, nearly 40 Loma Verde Bears joined the school's Green Team. They run lunchtime waste-sorting stations and a food-share bin, helping divert nearly 11,600 lbs of food waste district-wide.

Decarbonization

We support electrification, energy conservation, renewable energy production, solar power, EV charging, and sustainable transportation.

Safe Routes to Schools

Across Rancho, Lu Sutton, Loma Verde, and Pleasant Valley, SMS supports Safe Routes to Schools — mapping walking and biking routes to encourage "green trips" and lower the carbon footprint of daily drop-off and pickup.

Campus Greening & Resilience

We support pollinator and food gardens, native habitat restoration, outdoor classrooms, watershed protection, rain gardens, soil health, canopy cover, asphalt removal, and wildfire resilience.

At Hamilton TK-8

Hamilton has made campus greening central to its work with SMS, prioritizing environmental literacy alongside a school garden that supplies produce back to the community.
