California Biodiversity Day

Sunday September 7th

Sustainable Marin Schools invites your class to help celebrate California Biodiversity Day this year from September 6 to 14.

Students of all ages love learning about animals, plants, and the nature around them that they can touch, smell, and see.  Educators have the power to foster the next generation of environmental stewards by bringing the wonders of the outdoors into schools and sparking student curiosity and experiential learning.

Below is a list of educator resources to help classroom teachers and parents foster connectivity with nature for students of all ages:

  • Events near you - Participate all week long with in-person and virtual events hosted by individuals, communities, and organizations throughout the state. Closest to Novato is in Olompali State Historic Park on Sunday, September 7th (link).
  • Livestream Webinars - California State Parks and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will host multiple virtual interpretive programs for K-12 students throughout the week.
  • Educator Resources - Activities rooted in STEAM principles that don't require purchasing of any supplies. These activities can be easily scaled to accommodate various learning abilities and grade levels.
  • Educator Toolkit - A collection of classroom-friendly materials packed with engaging coloring pages and quick, little-to-no-prep activities that showcase the amazing native plants, animals, and ecosystems found across California. It’s a perfect way to spark student curiosity and bring environmental awareness into your in-person classroom—without significantly adding to your prep time.

Teachers like you have the power to foster the next generation of environmental stewards. Thank you for sparking student curiosity about nature and supporting everyday actions to protect and conserve the world around us. We hope you join us this September to celebrate California's biodiversity!
